The Slovak Agriculture Research Centre located in Nitra has finalized a large research project on sows. The goal was to determine the influence of digestarom on performance parameters in lactating sows. One of the major benefits demonstrated was the better condition of the sows fed the digestarom containing feed due to better protein digestion. Less weight loss during lactation was observed and this was particularly noticeable in young sows.
The levels of progesterone and oestradiol in the milk were also measured and it was found that the degradation of the corpus luteum in the digestarom-group was faster than in the control-group. Therefore, it can be concluded that animals fed with digestarom are likely to come into the next production cycle earlier.
Analysis of the sow's milk (fat, protein and lactose) indicated that the animals in the digestarom group were better adapted to milk production especially in the critical time immediately after parturition.
